Help Us Keep Being Awesome

Horizon Learning Centre is a small non-profit with deep roots here in the Peace Region. We believe in working towards the betterment of our community by empowering people through education.

  • Board Member

Over the past few years, our programming has shifted to focus on Foundational Skills and English Language Learning. Foundational skills focus on the 9 Essential Skills: Reading, Writing, Document Use, Computer Use, Thinking, Oral Communication, Working With Others and, Continuous Learning.

Much of our work in Foundational Skills is done through one-to-one learning. Our learner base is constantly expanding and we need voluntees to keep up with the demand. Most volunteer personal tutors work with a learner about once a week for about an hour on a schedule that works for both the volunteer and the learner.

Learner needs mostly vary from one or a combination of basic literacy, basic math, basic computer skills. We serve from a very beginner level to about a grade 9 level. We also provide ongoing training and support for our volunteers to ensure that they and their learners are succeful.

As a personal tutor, you would work directly with our Foundational Skills Coordinator on a learning plan that they have developed for the Learner. We also ask you to track your hours towards our volunteer rewards program. Various members of the community have donated little thank-you gifts to reward you for the hard work and dedication that you give to help make our community a better place.

As classroom help you could be working with our English Language Learning or Foundational Learning Coordinator, depending on where your area of interest and skills lay.

As a Board Member, you would help to oversee our organization as a whole and to maintain the integrity and legacy of Horizon Learning Centre and the Peace Association for Lifelong Learning. We hold monthly meetings and hope to take a larger role in fundraising efforts in the year to come. We have a limited number of seats on our board but we like to keep the door for applicants open as our lives and commitments are always shifting.

Volunteer Requirements

All of our volunteers are required to undergo an interview process, provide credible references and to undergo a criminal record check. We also require our volunteers to uphold a strict confidentiality code for our learners and our organization.
